Puppy Training in Ottawa & Gatineau — In-Home, From Day One

Bringing a puppy home is the most important training window of their life. The first 16 weeks shape how they handle the world — strangers, other dogs, noise, being alone, being touched. Get it right and you have a calm, confident family dog. Get it wrong and you spend the next two years fixing what eight weeks could have prevented.

BetterDog comes to your home, works with your puppy where the problems actually start, and gives you a system you'll use every day for the next 15 years. No treats as a crutch. No shock collars. Body language, timing, calm confident leadership, and leash communication — clear signals your puppy can actually understand.

What's Actually Going On at This Age

Most puppy problems aren't training problems. They're communication problems. Your puppy isn't trying to be "bad." They're trying to figure out a world they don't understand yet — and they're learning every minute of every day whether you're teaching them or not. The piddle on the floor, the biting, the barking at the door, the chewing — every one of those is a puppy looking for information about how this house works. We give them that information in a way they can actually receive it. Calm. Clear. Consistent. From the first session.

What We Cover in Your Puppy Life Changer Session

In one session in your home, we work on the things that matter most in the first year: House manners — calm at the door, calm at the food bowl, calm on the couch Potty training — the predictable rhythm that ends accidents within days, not months Biting and mouthing — how to teach a puppy what teeth are for without yelling, treats, or hand-flapping Leash basics — your puppy learning the leash before they learn to pull Crate confidence — a puppy who chooses the crate, not one who panics in it Socialization done right — exposure without flooding, confidence without chaos The morning routine — the single most important habit that decides what the next 15 years look like You leave with a Study Guide, from the recorded session

Why In-Home Matters for a Puppy

A puppy class teaches your puppy how to behave in a puppy class. That's not where the problems are. The problems are in your kitchen. At your front door. On your couch. In your backyard. We come to where the behaviour is actually happening, work the dog where the dog is going to live, and leave you with skills that work in your real life — not in a rented gymnasium full of treats.

Frequently Asked Questions — Puppy Training Ottawa

When should I start training my puppy? The day they come home. The first 16 weeks are the most important socialization window of your puppy's life — what they experience now shapes how they handle the world for the next 15 years. We work with puppies as young as 8 weeks. Is my puppy too young for a Life Changer Session? No. The earlier we start, the easier the work is and the more you'll get out of every dollar. Waiting until your puppy is 6 months old means we're undoing habits instead of preventing them. Do you train in French? Yes. Nancy is fully bilingual and delivers sessions across Gatineau, Hull, Aylmer, Le Plateau, and surrounding areas. Do you use treats? Not as a crutch. We teach your puppy to work with you because they trust you and read your communication — not because you have food in your hand. Treats are a tool we use occasionally; they're not the engine of the training. What happens after the first session? If you fall in love with the changes, we have an Unlimited Training Pass at $1,200/year (or $125/month on a 12-month commitment) that covers every follow-up, every Pack Walk, and unlimited support throughout the year. No pressure — most clients see what they need in the first session and decide from there. How much does puppy training in Ottawa cost? Our Puppy Life Changer Session is $500 tax-in — one fee per household, regardless of how many puppies. About 3 hours in your home: 1 hour on the why and how, 2 hours hands-on. Includes Study Guide, recorded session, and ongoing online access. What areas do you serve? Ottawa, Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven, Orleans, Glebe, Westboro, Rockland, Alta Vista, Gatineau, Hull, Aylmer, Le Plateau, Masson-Angers, Cantley, and Lochaber-Partie-Ouest.
